In many years of business travel — first as an executive for Shell Oil company, and for the past 18 years as a partner at a Houston-based private equity firm — Andrew L. Waite, 52 has seen his share of snaking airport security lines, long layovers and missed connections. But these days, when traveling for pleasure with his
family, he avoids such inconveniences and packs more recreation into a short space of time by chartering a private jet.
On a two-week trip to Southeast Asia last Christmas, Waite, his wife AnnaLee and their sons Henry, 19 and Oliver, 14, flew business class on Qatar Airlines to Bangkok, then transferred to a Gulfstream 200 they had chartered to transport them around Myanmar. The private jet took them from Mandalay to within an hour’s drive of Inle Lake in the Shan Hills, where fishermen in longyis are known for their unique rowing style: they stand barefoot on the stern of the boat and operate the oar with one leg.
